ST. PAUL, Minn. –The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, awarded a $1,292,230 contract Aug. 31, to Kraemer North America, LLC, of Plain, Wisconsin, to make repairs to the Lock and Dam 6 navigation support system.
The system, also known as a traveling mooring bitt system, aids navigation vessels as they lock through the chamber. Corps staff connect the mooring bitt to the barges, and the bitt then rides on a rail system to move barges out of the lock chamber.
The repair work includes removing the existing rail system and making necessary repairs to the concrete before installing a new system. The work is scheduled to begin this winter and should be completed by the end of spring 2019. The repair work will not impact navigation since the work will be completed during the winter
The nearly 650 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, employees working at more than 40 sites in five upper-Midwest states serve the American public in the areas of environmental enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, water and wetlands regulation, recreation sites and disaster response. Through the St. Paul District Fiscal Year 2018 $106 million budget, nearly 1,700 non-Corps jobs were added to the regional economy as well as $163 million to the national economy.
