The sponsor is proposing to restore approximately 105.1 acres of natural habitat ranging from deep water marsh transitioning to shallow marsh, coniferous swamp, sedge/wet meadow, and mesic prairie. Remaining upland areas not suitable for wetland restoration would be planted to native warm season grassland prairie species to provide nesting and other wildlife habitat benefits. The sponsor proposes to achieve the project objectives by blocking the ditch where existing surface drainage swales outlet along the south side of the easement to restore wetland habitat and hydrologic conditions. The sponsor plans to plant tamarack (Larix laricina) and black spruce (Picea mariana) in the areas upgradient of the shallow water marsh, restoring 27.4 acres of coniferous swamp. The sponsor proposes to plant areas of shallower saturation with sedge/wet meadow species (18.6 acres), with areas of seasonal high water being planted to mesic prairie species (18.9 acres). The areas closer to the outlet are proposed to create 9.2 acres of deep marsh transitioning into 31 acres of shallow marsh. The remaining upland area, approximately 10 acres in size, would be planted with warm season prairie species. The proposed site falls within the floodplain of the Wolf River, west of Shiocton, Wisconsin.
