Purpose
This program educates individuals who live and work in floodplains on flood hazards and the actions that those individuals can take to reduce property damage and prevent the loss of life. The program’s objective is to foster public understanding of the options for dealing with flood hazards and to promote prudent use and management of the nation’s floodplains.
The program provides the full range of technical services and planning guidance that is needed to support effective floodplain management. The most common types of studies focus on floodplain delineation, flood hazard evaluation, dam break analysis, hurricane evacuation planning, flood warning and preparedness, regulatory floodway analysis, comprehensive floodplain management, flood risk reduction, urbanization impacts, storm water management, floodproofing, and inventory of flood-prone structures. The program also aids with conducting workshops and seminars on nonstructural floodplain management measures such as floodproofing.
Location
Projects in the Floodplain Management Services program occur throughout Wisconsin. This project targets the southern half of Wood County, Wisconsin, in central Wisconsin.
Description
This project was initiated through an ongoing partnership with Wisconsin Department of Emergency Management and the Wisconsin Silver Jackets team. The products are conceptual and detailed groundwater models of the Wood County area, focusing on the southern half of the county. Ongoing issues with surface water flooding were determined to be caused in large part by regional and local groundwater flow patterns.
Status
Field work for data logger installation for the Wood County, Wisconsin, Groundwater Study was completed. Installations were done on public land where available: Department of Natural Resources lands.
- Pre-coordination meetings were held with homeowners where siting was needed in back yards on private property.
- The data loggers will be in for a year.
- Data from the loggers will be collected after snowmelt in spring 2025. USACE will hold more discussions with local sponsors on what products they will need.
Philadelphia District groundwater modelers will perform the modeling work.
