ST. PAUL, Minn. –The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, recently awarded a $5.3 contract to Kaiyuh Services, LLC, of Anchorage, Alaska, to make repairs to the guidewalls at Locks and Dams 4 and 5A on the Mississippi River.
Guidewalls are long extensions of the lock walls, in either the upstream or downstream direction, that are parallel to the lock wall. These walls serve primarily to guide the long tows into the lock and to provide mooring facilities for tows too long to be accommodated in a single lockage.
The repair work focuses on filling the voids within the guidewalls with concrete. This ensures the stabilization of the structures for future years. The work is scheduled to begin this winter and should be completed by the end of spring 2019. The repair work will not impact navigation, since the work will be completed during the winter.
The nearly 650 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, employees working at more than 40 sites in five upper-Midwest states serve the American public in the areas of environmental enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, water and wetlands regulation, recreation sites and disaster response. Through the St. Paul District Fiscal Year 2018 $106 million budget, nearly 1,700 non-Corps jobs were added to the regional economy as well as $163 million to the national economy.
