Corps of Engineers provides funds for North Dakota sewer project

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers signed a project partnership agreement with the city of Petersburg, North Dakota to support the city’s sewer system replacement project, Sept.14.

The Petersburg Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project, currently in the design phase, is located approximately 45 miles west of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Once complete, it will replace the existing clay sanitary sewer system throughout the city with PVC lines and a new storm sewer lift station. The project also includes constructing drain tile under the city streets where the current sewer lines are believed to have acted as a drain tile system for groundwater.

The project has a total cost of approximately $3,620,000. The federal funding through the Corps’ Environmental Infrastructure federal funds will provide 75 percent of the total amount needed to complete the project. Construction on the project is expected to begin in 2018.

The project is a part of the Corps’ Environmental Infrastructure Assistance Program, commonly refered to as Section 594 within the state of North Dakota.

The nearly 600 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, employees working at more than 40 sites in five upper-Midwest states serve the American public in the areas of environmental enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, water and wetlands regulation, recreation sites and disaster response. Through the Corps’ Fiscal Year 2015 $100 million budget, nearly 1,600 non-Corps jobs were added to the regional economy as well as $155 million to the national economy.
