Corps of Engineers recognizes Burnsville, Minn., resident

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, selected Burnsville, Minn., resident Steve Eggers as one of its three Civil Servants of the Year this year.

The St. Paul District presents this award annually to the top three or four of its 700 employees. Eggers, who's worked for the Corps of Engineers for more than 35 years, is a senior ecologist at the district’s headquarters in St. Paul, Minn.

Eggers received this award in recognition of his technical expertise in wetland science. He is a recognized regional and national expert in wetlands, serving as a member of a national team responsible for updating the Corps wetland delineation manual, as well as participating in the update of the national wetland plant list and co-authoring the book Wetland Plants and Plant Communities of Minnesota and Wisconsin.

“During his 35-year career with the Corps, Steve [Eggers] has tirelessly served the public by providing training and assisting with wetland delineations and restoration projects,” said Tamara Cameron, the St. Paul District’s regulatory chief. “Most importantly, Steve has been instrumental in furthering our understanding of wetland science and connecting it with public policy.”

Eggers will receive his award at the 37th Annual Minnesota Federal Civil Servant of the Year Awards in St. Paul, Minn., May 2.

The nearly 650 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, employees working at more than 40 sites in five upper-Midwest states serve the American public in the areas of environmental enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, water and wetlands regulation, recreation sites and disaster response. Through the Corps’ Fiscal Year 2011 $175 million budget, nearly 2,800 non-Corps jobs were added to the regional economy as well as $271 million to the national economy.
