The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is adjusting its flood gates at the Lac qui Parle Lake, near Watson, Minnesota, due to ongoing rain within the basin.
Corps water managers increased the water releases today from 2,500 to 3,500 cubic feet per second, or cfs, and plan to increase to 4,500 cfs tomorrow. Officials anticipate the releases going back to 2,500 cfs by middle of May, which is in accordance with the operating plan. The increased outflow of water will mean the Minnesota River, downstream of the dam, will exceed its riverbanks in some locations.
Corps water managers urge caution around the area, especially with the upcoming fishing opener. Additional adjustments may be made based on future rain events.
