Corps of Engineers to close West Newton Chute Boat Landing during temporary dredged material unloading process this summer

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is closing the West Newton Chute Boat Landing on the Mississippi River near Kellogg, Minnesota, on or around May 20.

The Corps’ contractor, Dubuque Barge and Fleeting Service, from Dubuque, Iowa, has mobilized to the site, and the boat landing is being closed due to the heavy equipment operating within the area. The landing will be closed for the duration of the construction process. The dredging activity is expected to be complete by the end of fall 2019.  

The Corps of Engineers awarded the contract to remove around 1.3 million cubic yards of dredged material from Lost Island, a temporary storage area west of Buffalo City, Wisconsin, in September 2016. The material is being moved to a permanent upland placement site located in Kellogg.  

The Corps of Engineers is working in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to ensure the boat landing area remains safe during the construction process. Boaters are urged to use extreme caution around this area and to wear your life jacket. 

The nearly 600 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, employees working at more than 40 sites in five upper-Midwest states serve the American public in the areas of environmental enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, water and wetlands regulation, recreation sites and disaster response. Through the St. Paul District Fiscal Year 2016 $78 million budget, nearly 1,250 non-Corps jobs were added to the regional economy as well as $120 million to the national economy.
