    Mississippi River Headwaters parks recognized with safety award

    ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, recently selected its southern Headwaters recreation section as its 2012 Government Employee Safety Now Award recipient. The section includes park rangers from Crosslake Recreation Area, Crosslake, Minn., and Gull Lake Recreation Area, Brainerd, Minn. Both areas are highly visited recreation sites, collectively boasting more than 1,000,000 visits in 2012.

    Navigation on the Upper Mississippi River this year has been anything but normal. Historic flooding plagued the region for much of the spring and early summer. The floods brought historic high water and a significant increase in the amount of sediment. The high water has since receded leaving sediment as the sole souvenir of the 2019 flood.

    The Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today announced the first set of proposals being invited to apply for loans under the new Corps Water Infrastructure Financing Program (CWIFP). CWIFP is a new federal financing program to provide loans and loan guarantees for borrowers for safety projects to maintain, upgrade, and repair non-federal dams.

    St Paul, Minn. — Significant rainfall across the Rainy River-Namakan River Basin from May 19 to 21 has led to a rapid rise in lake levels. Rainy Lake will exceed the International Joint Commission’s Upper Rule Curve May 21, and is expected to continue rising in the near term as tributary flows increase. Operators at the dam, near International Falls, Minn., and Fort Frances, Canada, have opened all five canal gates and several dam gates to allow for maximum outflow.

    Red River Flood of 2009

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, declared a victory late April 2009 after facing massive flooding in the Red River of the North river valley for more than a month-and-a-half. By the end of the fight, the district had distributed 11.3 million sandbags, 4,201 rolls of plastic and 136 pumps, as well as let 50 contracts, built approximately 70 miles of emergency levee and spent more than $32 million.

The new look was unveiled at a ribbon cutting ceremony Aug. 17.

    Spring is near - Ice surveys begin on Lake Pepin

    A few district employees from the channels and harbors section are getting the opportunity to take out the district airboat on the Mississippi River this month to complete ice measurements on Lake Pepin, near Red Wing, Minn.
