  • HC Wyeville, Grygleski Pit

    Expiration date: 7/15/2025

The creation of Grygleski Pit is part of the long-term mining plan for HC Wyeville. The purpose of this project is to extract sand to fulfil the need for locally accessible material that is logistically and economically feasible. The project as proposed will expand the mining operations, allowing HC Wyeville access to additional mineable material, and extend the life of the facility. The Grygleski Pit, as proposed in the preferred alternative, has a life of 3-4 years based on current production rates.

  • 2005-00546-SPK (Mesabi Metalics)

    Expiration date: 7/14/2025

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District (Corps) has received a permit modification request from Mesabi Metallics Company LLC (MMCL) for DA permit MVP-2005-00546-JKA (issued in 2007). The permit and subsequent 2015 modification authorized the discharge of fill material within 765.3 acres of waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) for the purpose of mining taconite ore and producing steel in the Mesabi Iron Range, Itasca County, MN. Due to land control changes, MMCL requests a permit modification to permanently discharge fill material within 9.78 acres of wetland outside of the original permitted boundary for the purpose of replacing the taconite resources originally proposed but are no longer available and for stormwater management. Additionally, 74.85 acres of previously permitted discharges of fill material within wetlands is either no longer proposed or would not occur in WOTUS. The MMCL modification would result in a total discharge of fill material within 699.87 acres of WOTUS, compared to the 765.3 acres previously authorized.
