Expiration date: 7/31/2026
United States Steel Corporation (USS) is requesting a DA permit for a 112-acre mine pit expansion within wetlands and a 463 linear-foot segment of Parkville Creek. The mine expansion would occur within the southern edge of the existing East Pit near the abandoned Parkville neighborhood and would provide the applicant with an estimated 112 million long tons (LT) of ore over a 4-year period, accounting for an estimated 55 percent (28 million LT/yr) of the total ore movement for the facility. This expansion would extend the life of the Minntac mine to year 2044. The proposed work is expected to contain an estimated 23 million LT of surface and an estimated 68 million LT of waste rock. Existing stockpiles would be used to accommodate the overburden and waste rock, and new dumps would not be needed to accommodate the material.
The mine expansion would result in the permanent discharge of dredged and fill
material into approximately 3,846 square feet of Parkville Creek and into 15.22 acres of
wetlands as well as the indirect impact to 0.67-acre of wetlands due to fragmentation.
