Upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers Experiencing Widespread and Regional Changes
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District; and the U.S. Geological Survey, in partnership with others, have released a report regarding the Ecological Status and Trends of the Upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. The Status and Trends report is the third of its kind produced as part of the Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) program and includes information on long term changes in water quality, aquatic vegetation and fish from six study areas spread across the Upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. The report also summarizes trends in possible drivers of long-term changes in the river including river discharge and floodplain land cover.

Corps temporarily closes Lock and Dam 5A to nearly 90-year-old gates
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, will have four temporary closure periods at Lock and Dam 5A near Fountain City, Wisconsin, from July 19-28, to replace the lock chamber’s miter gates.

Corps extends public comment period for PolyMet’s Northmet Mine permit
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is providing an additional 15 days for the public to comment on the Clean Water Act Section 401(a)(2) action related to the PolyMet/NorthMet mining project. Public comments may be submitted until June 30.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, recently completed construction work at its Clamshell Lake boat access in Crosslake, Minnesota. The boat ramp is now open for use.

Corps temporarily closes Lock and Dam 8 to replace 85-year-old gates
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, will close Lock and Dam 8 in Genoa, Wisconsin, to navigation during four 12-hour closure periods from June 14-23, to replace the lock chamber’s miter gates.

Corps awards a $7.7 million contract to construct a fish passage at Drayton Dam
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, awarded a $7.7 million contract to HSG Park Joint Venture, LLC, of Harvey, North Dakota, to complete a fish passage structure at Drayton Dam, located around 60 miles north of Grand Forks, North Dakota, on the Red River of the North.

Corps of Engineers to increase Lake Ashtabula water releases
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, plans to increase water releases over the weekend from Baldhill Dam, near Valley City, North Dakota, this week to maintain storage capacity within Lake Ashtabula.

UPDATE: Corps postpones Marsh Lake project completion ceremony
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Upper Minnesota River Watershed District will celebrate the completion of the Marsh Lake environmental enhancement project with a ribbon cutting ceremony on July 14, at 11 a.m. This is an update from the previous date of May 17. This event is postponed due to recent rain and storm events, which have made it unsafe to access the site.
