    Moving sand isn’t just for kids

    Navigation on the Upper Mississippi River this year has been anything but normal. Historic flooding plagued the region for much of the spring and early summer. The floods brought historic high water and a significant increase in the amount of sediment. The high water has since receded leaving sediment as the sole souvenir of the 2019 flood.

    With more than 12 RED talks in the books, the St. Paul District is adjusting its sites on the knowledge sharing program in the coming weeks.

    SPRING VALLEY, Wis. – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District employees, veterans and hunters gathered at the Eau Galle Recreation Area, near Spring Valley, Wis., Dec. 13, for the third annual deer hunt. The Corps partnered with the Wounded Warrior Project and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to host the event. The goal was to connect veterans with other veterans and honor them for their service while also managing the deer herd in the recreation area.

    The St. Paul District environmental stewardship section has been busy lately planting trees near Bay City, Wis. The reforestation project began as a way to mitigate floodplain forest and wetlands that were lost due to the nearly $70 million dollars in renovations to Lock and Dam 3, near Red Wing, Minn.

    Northeast Minnesota is known for its views of Lake Superior, outdoor recreation opportunities, the call of the loon and its pristine wetlands.

  • Wetlands provide more than scenic views of nature

    Have you ever wondered what wetlands actually do for society or the environment? Barbara Walther, senior ecologist, said these areas, a place between water and land, provide value to both communities and Mother Nature. She said wetlands support many benefits that range from habitat for plants and animals to water purification. “Wetlands provide a number of functions on the landscape,” she said. “Some of them are important to people directly, and a number of them are important just because of the function they provide.”

    HASTINGS, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District welcomed the Motor Vessel Angela K to Lock and Dam 2, near Hastings, Minn., April 16. The vessel was the first line tow to reach St. Paul this year, which means all 13 locks and dams within the St. Paul District are now accessible to commercial and recreation vessels. The April 16 arrival is the latest non-flood related start to navigation since the Corps began maintaining records in 1970.

    Corps of Engineers welcomes navigation season after historic delay

    The 2014 Mississippi River navigation season in the St. Paul District has arrived. The Motor Vessel Angela K locked through Lock and Dam 2, near Hastings, Minn., around 5:30 p.m., April pushing 12 barges en route to St. Paul, Minn.

    RED WING, Minn. – Bill Chelmowski, St. Paul District small boat operation and ice survey technician, prepares to drill a hole in the Mississippi River, near Lake City, Minn., Feb. 27, to measure the ice thickness within Lake Pepin. The Corps of Engineers measures the ice thickness every spring and the navigation industry uses the information to determine when to break through the ice and begin the shipping season. Lake Pepin ice is traditionally the last hurdle for the navigation industry to deal with before reaching St. Paul, because the ice is usually a lot thicker in the lake due to the slow moving current.

    A routine business trip to Fargo, N.D., for two project managers was anything but normal when they came across a vehicle in the ditch.

The dog’s owner, Timothy Murphy, met Machajewski to say thanks after he saved his dog during temporary levee construction in Fargo. Murphy, a published poet, also sent a poem to Machajewski to show his gratitude. According to Murphy, Chucky is an escape artist that doesn’t have a reverse gear or know how to stop. Machajewski said he was just glad to help and as a fellow dog owner, he said he knew he had to do what he could to protect the dog from harm during the levee construction.

    When Paul Machajewski, operations, left his home near Winona, Minn., earlier this spring to serve as an emergency operations construction representative for the work being done in and around Fargo, N.D., rescuing a puppy wasn’t even a thought on his mind.
