Hours of operations to be reduced at Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam and Lock and Dam 1

Published Jan. 9, 2015

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, announced today the hours of operation will be reduced a to single, 10-hour shift, seven days a week, at Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam and Lock Dam 1 following the closure of Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam. These three locks are all located in Minneapolis.

The hours of operation for both locks will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., however, this will not go into effect until Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam is closed, no later than June, 10, 2014, as required by the Water Resources Reform and Development Act of 2014.

In the course of making this final decision, Corps staff evaluated many factors including a significantly higher than average number of lock closure days the past two years, impacts to staff, environmental concerns, navigation industry concerns and the impending closure of the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam to navigation.

Level of service determinations are reviewed on an annual basis. If actual usage trends in future years are different from what is anticipated, the level of service may be adjusted.

The nearly 650 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, employees working at more than 40 sites in five upper-Midwest states serve the American public in the areas of environmental enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, water and wetlands regulation, recreation sites and disaster response. Through the Corps’ Fiscal Year 2014 $100 million budget, nearly 1,600 non-Corps jobs were added to the regional economy as well as $155 million to the national economy.
