ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, will complete its dredged material unloading project at the Grand Encampment island placement site, in Buffalo County, Wisconsin, next week. The Corps’ contractor, Black River Constructors Joint Venture, a joint venture including JF Brennan Marine from La Crosse, Wisconsin, and Hoffman Construction from Black River Falls, Wisconsin, completed the final truck shipments this week. The contractor will continue dredging material from the island for one more week. The final weeks’ worth of dredged material will remain at the Alma Marina placement site to be used for local beneficial uses. The contractor began the unloading project in May 2014. Collectively, 550,000 cubic yards of material was unloaded from the island. Removing the material was necessary for the Corps to continue using it as a placement site for maintenance of the 9-foot navigation channel. The channel provides the necessary depth for commercial navigation to transport goods to and from the Upper Midwest. The nearly 650 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, employees working at more than 40 sites in five upper-Midwest states serve the American public in the areas of environmental enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, water and wetlands regulation, recreation sites and disaster response. Through the Corps’ Fiscal Year 2014 $100 million budget, nearly 1,600 non-Corps jobs were added to the regional economy as well as $155 million to the national economy.
