ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is hosting an open house June 22, from 5:30 – 8 p.m., to gather the public’s input on its Mississippi River dredged material management plans near Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.

The event will be held at the Prairie du Chien City Hall, 214 E Blackhawk Ave., in Prairie du Chien.

The open house will focus on areas within Pool 9 and Pool 10, which includes the area south of Lock and Dam 8 in Genoa, Wisconsin, to Lock and Dam 10 in Guttenberg, Iowa. A brief overview about the Mississippi River and the Corps’ navigation mission will be presented at 5:30 and repeated at 7 p.m. Corps staff will be available throughout the open house to answer questions about the organization and to discuss options where to best place dredged material, or river sand, that is removed from the navigation channel through dredging operations.

Additionally, Corps officials welcome ideas on the best way to reuse dredged material. Historically, the material has been reused for a variety of applications to include general construction fill, winter road maintenance and island construction within the river.

The public is asked to take appropriate precautions due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Corps of Engineers needs to keep the Mississippi River navigation channel open for commercial traffic to ensure the stability of the national, regional and local economies. Many of our permanent placement sites for dredged material are nearly full, and it has become increasingly challenging to find suitable sites for future placements.
