Public invited to visit a lock in Minneapolis, Hastings

Published July 9, 2019

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, will host open houses at Lock and Dam 1, in Minneapolis, July 19, and Lock and Dam 2, near Hastings, July 20.

The open house at Lock and Dam 1 will be held Friday, July 19, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. to coincide with St. Paul’s Highland Fest. The site is located at 5000 West River Parkway, Minneapolis.

The Lock and Dam 2 event will take place Saturday, July 20, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. to coincide with Hastings Rivertown Days. The site is located at 1350 Lock and Dam Road, Hastings.

Members of the community and surrounding areas are invited to meet lock staff, explore the facility, learn about water safety and catch a front-row seat as vessels lock through.

The St. Paul District’s navigation program provides a safe, reliable and cost-effective and environmentally sustainable waterborne transportation system on the Upper Mississippi River for the movement of commercial goods and for national security needs. To do this, the district maintains a 9-foot navigation channel and 13 locks and dams from Minneapolis to Guttenberg, Iowa. Keeping this system open is vital to the nation’s economy.
