Lock & Dam 3

  • Located on Mississippi River mile 796.9 near Red Wing, Minnesota.
  • Constructed and placed in operation July 1938. The site underwent major rehabilitation from 1988 through 1991.
  • The dam is 365' long with four roller gates. More than 2,000 feet of earth embankment with a series of upstream spot dikes completes the structure to create Pool 3.
  • The lock chamber is 110 feet wide by 600 feet long.

    Navigation Safety and Embankment Improvement project  

  • Here is a summary of the Lock & Dam 3 Navigation Safety and Embankment Improvement project. The project was substantially complete in November 2012. The improvements included:
    • an 862-foot-long guide wall extension that was completed in April 2011;

    • a closure dike to mitigate outdraft conditions near the guide wall that was completed in October 2011; and

    • channel dredging and the placement of approximately 150,000 cubic yards of material which was completed in February 2012. 

  • The lower embankment improvements included the construction of a series of engineered embankments and spillways totaling several thousand linear feet and associated control structures which were completed in November 2012.  The upper embankments improvements included the reconstruction of nine channel closures along the Wisconsin embankment.   Construction was completed in October 2011. Environmental mitigation to restore 313 acres of floodplain was completed in fall 2012.
