Corps seeks comments on its Upper Mississippi River forest management practices

Published April 8, 2020

ST. PAUL, Minn. –The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is seeking comments on a draft programmatic Environmental Assessment, or EA, it released today, April 8.

Corps officials are accepting comments now through May 8.

The draft EA focuses on the Corps’ floodplain forest management activities along the Mississippi River from Upper St. Anthony Falls in Minneapolis to just downstream of Lock and Dam 10, in Guttenberg, Iowa.

Corps staff are proposing to use a set of refined forest management practices to actively manage the floodplain forest with Corps' ownership in this area. Forest management practices include: stand manipulation; site preparation, planting and seeding; prescribed burns; chemical application; mechanical vegetation management; biological control; and wildlife habitat improvements. These management practices will have a beneficial effect on the Upper Mississippi River through the restoration, creation and enhancement of floodplain forest habitat.
A draft EA describing the project and the environmental impacts in detail is available to the public and can be viewed and downloaded from the St. Paul District website at: www.mvp.usace.army.mil/Home/PublicNotices.aspx.

Questions on the project or comments on the EA can be directed to LeeAnn Glomski, project biologist, at 651-290-5595 or LeeAnn.M.Glomski@usace.army.mil. Please address all formal written correspondence on this project to the St. Paul District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, ATTN: Regional Planning and Environment Division North, 180 5th St. E., Suite 700, St. Paul, MN 55101.
