Sandy Lake Tragedy Remembrance
Paddlers set-out at the Savanna Portage State Park Boat landing to travel a portion of the historic Savanna Portage canoe route during Mikwedaagoziwag, the annual Sandy Lake Tragedy remembrance on July 25, 2018. For more than 10 years area tribes – joined by community members, supporters and representatives from the St. Paul District – have started a nearly one-hour paddle here, ending at the Sandy lake Recreation Area. The journey across Big Sandy Lake is one tradition among many on this day of remembrance to the nearly 400 Ojibwe that died during the tragedy at Big Sandy Lake in 1850.
