LD10 lockmaster
After what everyone hopes is the final winter storm of the season, repairs continue at Lock and Dam 10, near Guttenberg, Iowa, on March 6, 2018. The maintenance and repair crew use a crane to remove the bulkhead from the upstream-miter gate which allowed crews to work safely in the loc. Progress was also made on removing forms used to pour concrete and reinforce the guidewall, and welding to strengthen the armor plating seams. Busy workdays are standard during the winter months at the St. Paul District’s locks and dams, as crews utilize the navigation offseason to maintain and repair the infrastructure that keeps barges moving up and down the Mississippi River. Work at all locations is on pace to ensure full operation for when the first tow of the season busts through at Lake Pepin, which is the last segment of the river to be blocked by river ice.
