Four adult chaperones and 13 students from the La Crescent Montessori Stem School of La Crescent, Minnesota, voluntarily planted 100 trees in two hours at Goose Island Park, which is located 3 miles south of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers land Oct. 24. The intent of the tree planting project was to control the spread of the invasive reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea) in the park. The students, who ranged in age from 12 to 17 years old, also installed fertilizer tablets, animal repellent tablets and 24" trees shelter protectors to each tree. –USACE photo
