Taking Frost Measurements
Corps park ranger Scott Tichy faces bitter temperatures in Valley City, N.D., to take frost measurements from the frost tube guage at Baldhill Dam. (The frost tube reading here was 14 inches.) The rangers at this site take weekly frost depth, lake ice thickness, snow depth and snow water equivalent readings. This information is then used by Corps water management officials and the National Weather Service to help with forecasting and determine the winter drawdown level for Lake Ashtabula.
