Colonel Matthew B. Chase assumed command of the St. Paul District July 18, 2025, becoming the district’s 68th commander and district engineer.

The St. Paul District employs around 750 professionals that work at more than 40 sites in five upper-Midwest states. The district serves the American public in the areas of navigation, flood risk management, environmental enhancement, water and wetlands regulation, recreation sites and disaster response.

Chase’s previous assignments include Executive Officer to the Director, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Springfield, Virginia; Battalion Commander, 70th Brigade Engineer Battalion “Kodiaks”,1st Brigade Combat Team, 11th Airborne Division, Fort Wainwright, Alaska; Strategic Planner to the Commanding General, United States Army Corps of Engineers, Washington, District of Columbia; Battalion Executive & Operations Officer, 37th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Engineer Branch Representative and later Department Executive Officer, Department of Military Instruction, United States Military Academy, West Point, New York; Company Commander, 630th Engineer Company, 7th Engineer Battalion, Fort Drum, New York; Battalion Adjutant and later Battalion Assistant Operations Officer, 7th Engineer Battalion at Fort Drum, New York; Battalion Logistics Officer for 2-1 Infantry Battalion, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team; and Platoon Leader and later Company Executive Officer for the 562nd Engineer Company, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Chase holds a Master of Science in National Security and Strategic Studies from the National War College; a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Stanford University; a Master of Science in Engineering Management from the Missouri University of Science and Technology; and a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering from the United States Military Academy.

Chase’s military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal. He also earned the Combat Action Badge, the Air Assault Badge, Parachutist Badge, Ranger and Sapper tabs.
