Corps of Engineers begins Mud Lake temporary drawdown

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, will start temporarily lowering water levels at Mud Lake, located in Traverse County, Minnesota, and Robert County, South Dakota, today, Aug.10.

The gradual drawdown will continue through Sept. 15. This is designed to improve the local wildlife habitat by exposing shoreline sediments, which encourages the growth of beneficial aquatic vegetation and enhances food sources for migratory waterfowl.

The lake is currently at its standard summer elevation of 972 feet. Over the course of the month-long project, water control managers will slowly lower the water level by 5 feet to an elevation of approximately 967 feet. Managers anticipate returning the water levels to 972 feet beginning Sept. 15.

Recreationists, particularly boaters, are urged to use caution during this period, as lower water levels may expose hazards that are normally submerged. Boaters should always follow posted signage and wear life jackets.

The St. Paul District’s water management team will monitor weather forecasts and inflows closely throughout the process, adjusting the drawdown rate as necessary to balance environmental goals with downstream water needs.
