Corps of Engineers to host public meeting on Mississippi River dredging

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District
Published Feb. 25, 2026

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is hosting a public meeting on its dredging activities within Pools 3 and Upper Pool 4 of the Upper Mississippi River, March 10, from 5-7 p.m.

The event will be held at the Red Wing Public Library, 225 E Ave., Red Wing, MN 55066.

A short presentation will begin at 5 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session to discuss ongoing dredging requirements to maintain the Mississippi River 9-foot navigation channel.

Corps of Engineers staff are looking for information regarding its current dredging operations and future placement requirements for material removed from the river as a part of the Corps of Engineers’ mission to maintain the Mississippi River 9-foot navigation channel. Once the material is dredged from the river, the Corps tries to find suitable upland placement sites with the intent of it being beneficially reused for a variety of options to include general construction fill material, winter road maintenance, habit improvement projects and more.

People needing special accommodations for the meeting should contact 651-290-5807 or cemvp-pa@usace.army.mil no later than Feb. 24.

The St. Paul District maintains a 9-foot navigation channel from Minneapolis to Guttenberg, Iowa. Keeping this system open is vital to the nation’s economy. In 2025, Corps staff supported the movement of over 5.6 million tons of commodities at Lock and Dam 3, near Welch, Minnesota. These commodities include corn, soybeans, fertilizer and cement. The tonnage is the equivalent of around 3,200 barges or 224,000 tractor trailers or 51,000 rail cars.
