Corps to contract for construction of I-29 grade raise for Fargo-Moorhead diversion project

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is beginning the contracting process for construction of a raise of I-29, where it crosses the southern embankment of the Fargo, North Dakota/Moorhead, Minnesota, Metropolitan Area Flood Risk Management Project.

This I-29 grade raise will be the third construction contract awarded by the federal government for the Fargo-Moorhead diversion project and is being executed in cooperation with the North Dakota Department of Transportation. The contract will include a raise of I-29 from south of Exit 50 (Hickson Interchange) to Exit 54 (Davenport/Oxbow Interchange), bridges, a four-lane temporary bypass to maintain traffic and limit interruptions, and raises of County Roads 18 and 81 near Oxbow, North Dakota.

Construction is scheduled to begin in Spring 2021 with the bypass in place by October 2021.

This congressionally authorized project is a 30-mile long diversion channel in North Dakota with upstream staging. The plan includes a 21-mile long southern embankment, 19 highway bridges, four railroad bridges, three gated control structures and two aqueduct structures. The Corps is working in partnership on this project with the cities of Fargo and Moorhead and the Metro Flood Diversion Authority. This project provides flood risk reduction for more than 230,000 people and 70 square miles of infrastructure in the communities of Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo, Horace and Harwood.
