Corps of Engineers to host free youth fishing derby at Blackhawk Park

Blackhawk Park on the Mississippi River. The St. Paul District operates 49 recreation areas, ranging from public landings along the Mississippi River to lock and dam visitor centers to full-service campgrounds. ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is hosting a free youth fishing derby for kids age 12 and under at its Blackhawk Park near De Soto, Wisconsin, Saturday, Aug. 1.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and local partners are also sponsoring this event.

Registration begins at 8 a.m., and all children need to be registered by 8:50 a.m. Educational programs will be held from 9 - 10:20 a.m. The derby begins at 10:30 a.m. Participants will be registered under one of three age groups: 5 years old and younger, 6 - 9 years old, and 10 - 12 years old.

All fishing must be done from shore and within park boundaries. Participants need to bring their own sunscreen and a fishing pole. Local merchants will provide bait, a light lunch and prizes.

The fishing derby will be held rain or shine but will be delayed if there is lightening in the area. For more information, contact Blackhawk Park at (608) 648-3314.

Through the Corps’ Fiscal Year 2014 $100 million budget, nearly 1,600 non-Corps jobs were added to the regional economy as well as $155 million to the national economy.
