Corps’ Leech Lake Recreation Area to host free youth fishing derby

Fishing below Leech Lake Dam at Federal Dam, Minn.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is hosting a free youth fishing derby for kids age 14 and under at its Leech Lake Recreation Area in Federal Dam, Minn., July 20.

Registration and activities will begin at 11 a.m. The fishing derby will be from noon to 1 p.m. with an awards presentation to follow. Trophies will be given for first, second and third place for longest fish caught in each age group. Participants will be registered in one of the three age groups: 1-4 years, 5-9 years or 10-14 years. Every participant gets a prize.

All fishing will take place from both shores below the dam. Free hot dogs, chips and pop for contestants. Local merchants will provide the bait. All you need is your lucky fishing pole.

The fishing derby will be held rain or shine but will be delayed if there is lightening in the area. For more information, please contact the park at (218) 654-3145.
