Corps of Engineers, Diversion Authority to host open house on the proposed

Published June 20, 2012
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, in cooperation with the Flood Diversion Authority, is hosting a public open house June 26 to provide project design updates for the first segment of the proposed Fargo, N.D.,/Moorhead, Minn., flood diversion project.

The first segment, or reach 1, begins at the outlet structure located near Georgetown, Minn. where the diversion project will meet the Red River of the North, and extends upstream approximately 4 miles.

The open house will be held at the Holiday Inn Fargo, located at 3803 13th Ave. S., from 6 to 8 p.m. Anyone interested in the project is welcome to attend.

The proposed project will involve the construction of a 36-mile long diversion channel located in North Dakota that will direct floodwater around the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area. The project will temporarily store up to 200,000 acre-feet of flood water immediately upstream of the diversion channel inlet in order to minimize downstream impacts.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, serves the American public in the areas of environmental enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, water and wetlands regulation, recreation sites and disaster response. It contributes around $175 million to the five-state district economy. The 700 employees work at more than 40 sites in five upper-Midwest states. For more information, see www.mvp.usace.army.mil.
