New Pool 9 islands
Meet one of the newest islands in Pool 9! This island in the Mississippi River’s Pool 9 is one of five that’s being constructed during the 2nd phase of the project. When completed, this project will have moved 200,000 cubic yards of sand and 50,000 yards of fine material to create and protect the islands within the river. The project is a part of the Corps’ Upper Mississippi River Environmental Management Program, and the goal is to reduce environmental damage caused by the creation of the 9-foot navigation channel. The islands provide beneficial habitat for fish and migratory birds. Once completed, the project will be turned over to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service for day-to-day management.
