The damaged upstream miter gate replacement at Lock and Dam 5A near Winona, Minn. Here, the matching pair of miter gates stand ready. While only one gate was damaged at Lock and Dam 5A, if the old gate and the new gate don't match up correctly when in the closed correctly, then the second temporary replacement gate would have to be installed as well. The original gate, which was constructed when the lock and dam was being built in the 1930s, was severely damaged after being struck by a barge on May 16, 2013.
